The 2025 GMC Canyon isn’t just a work truck for carrying and towing heavy loads or regular city driving. It’s also capable of taking on the great outdoors with ease. We’re going to take a closer look at some of its trail-ready capabilities.
Trail-Ready Capabilities of the 2025 GMC Canyon
Powerful Engine
The Canyon is powered by a TurboMax 2.7L 4-cylinder gasoline engine that delivers 310 hp and 430 lb-ft of torque. It’s paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission and RWD as standard. If you prefer, you can opt for the 4WD, which is the optimum choice for off-road driving. When properly equipped, this engine gives your Canyon the power to tow up to 7,700 pounds.
ATV4 Trim
This option is available with 4WD only and includes several specialized features for off-roading. These include an automatic locking rear wheel slip differential, which forces both wheels to move at the same speed instead of the standard movement where the wheels turn at different speeds. This is important when you’re driving on slippery surfaces, as it ensures power is sent to both wheels, so the wheel with the best traction ensures you move forward.
It also adds Two-Speed Autotrac transfer case and transfer case shield, and Advanced Hill Descent Control. This feature is perfect for driving down steep or slippery slopes, as it uses the anti-lock braking system to automatically apply the brakes to control speed on the descent. This prevents the brakes from overheating and improves handling.
Multiple Drive Modes
The Canyon features four standard drive modes: Normal, Terrain, Off-Road, and Tow/Haul, and an available Baja Mode. Normal Mode is the standard mode you use for everyday driving, while Off-Road Mode provides increased traction on loose or slippery surfaces like gravel, sand, and mud. Terrain Mode is useful for low-speed navigation over difficult terrain, and Tow/Haul adjusts power and transmission shifts when towing a heavy load.
Baja Mode is added with the available AT4X package, which we’ll look at below. It’s designed for desert terrain and adjusts your suspension and traction control as needed for peak performance at speed.
AT4X Package
This package, available on the ATV4 trim, improves off-road handling even further. It includes automatic full-locking front and rear limited slip differentials, and off-road rocker protection to protect the doors, chassis, and rockers against damage from rocks and other hazards. The standard suspension is replaced with Off-Road Suspension that lifts the Canyon 3″ higher for greater ground clearance. Finally, larger and more rugged off-road tires are installed, together with a trailer package for towing.
